Because of Zev's brush with fainting on sunday, we looked into some so-called electrolyte drinks for him. We still think giving blood that day had something to do with it but he will be in the Texas heat this summer and will need something.
Turns out, the ones you buy in the store, famous brands, Powerade, Gatorade, etc., are very bad for a body because of all the chemicals. And there is high fructose corn syrup as the sweetener for the regular drinks. In the sugar free ones, among the chemicals like dyes, glycerol esters of wood rosins (oh yum!), there is Sucralose or Splenda.
This has proven to be a very toxic chemical and side effects can include......
Seizures, dizziness and migraines
Blood sugar increases and weight gain
Also Dr Mercola had this to say....."At the time of my last analysis in 2006, there were only six human trials published on Splenda (sucralose). Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption. The two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects."
And this from Natural news....."Splenda Essentials revealed as chemical sweetener containing chlorine atoms"
Many other prominent Dr's and health advocates have listed the potential dangers over and over. All of this and not to even mention the cost! So I found a cheaper better way to make our own electrolyte drink and it tastes great!
2 quarts filtered water (preferably with fluoride filtered out)
Your choice of lemons, limes and/or oranges. This will be to taste. You can simply float a few slices and that works. I would use a whole lime squeezed and half a lemon or just a few slices because I like lime best. If I used orange, I would only use a few orange slices and maybe a quarter squeezed. This is to taste and needs to be a light taste.
1/2 teaspoon "No Salt" brand salt substitute (this is potassium!)
1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt
1/2 to 1 teaspoon Vitamin C powder.....be sure of the source because it can be GMO
2 Tablespoons raw honey (important, don't leave out!!)
Stevia to taste if it's not quite sweet enough.
Mix in a jar and chill. The honey is anti-biotic acting and will kill potentially harmful summer "bugs" that go around and help the cells to absorb the other minerals. It has over 27 minerals itself!!!
Also, unpasteurized coconut water is very close to our body's own fluid make-up but darn....SOOOO expensive!! This concoction cost about 22 cents per 2 quarts!!!!!!
